The doctorate in information sciences is aimed at anyone who wishes to initiate research and contribute to the theoretical and/or practical advancement of the discipline by carrying out a research project and preparing a thesis. Access to the program is reserved for candidates with a graduate university degree (master 's  degree or its equivalent) in a field of application in information sciences or a related discipline.

The School of Library and Information Sciences (EBSI) is open to multidisciplinary research and encourages graduates from other disciplines (communication, history, linguistics, computer science, etc.) to learn about the conditions of 'admission.

To be eligible as a regular student, the candidate must meet the general eligibility conditions (section XX) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

To meet the Université de Montréal average of 3.3 out of 4.3, candidates from this province must meet the following requirements:

Conditions specific to this program


To be eligible as a regular student for the Doctorate in Information Sciences, the candidate must:

  • meet the general eligibility conditions (section XXVI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
  • hold a diploma equivalent to a master's degree from the University of Montreal in information sciences or the equivalent
  • have obtained an average of at least 3.3 out of 4.3 in the 2nd cycle, or the equivalent
