Bioethics is interested in the ethical issues of various environments having an impact on society, whether in the clinical environment, research, health policies or the environment. The master's degree in bioethics aims to offer you solid theoretical and practical training in bioethics. It seeks to promote structured reflection on ethical issues related to decision-making in the field of clinical practice, research and population health. This program is aimed at professional personnel and people interested in this field who wish to deepen their ethical reflections and equip themselves with tools to improve the quality of their work. It is open to graduates from all disciplinary fields, including humanities and social sciences, law, health sciences and biological sciences, who want to deepen their knowledge and expertise in bioethics.

The master's program in bioethics has 2 pathways:

Modality with internship or supervised work

Opt for the professional master's degree with supervised work if you are aiming for a professional career in bioethics. This component includes 10 courses with directed work (TD; 15 credits, 40-50 pages), and is done full-time or half-time.

Modality with memory

Opt for the research master's degree with dissertation if you are aiming for a career in bioethics research. This component includes 7 courses and a dissertation (24 credits, 80-100 pages), and is only done full-time.

To be eligible as a regular student, the candidate must meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

To meet the Université de Montréal average of 3.0 out of 4.3, candidates from this province must meet the following requirements:

Accepted diploma: Baccalaureate, Bachelor; duration of 3 years, or other undergraduate degree deemed equivalent.

Conditions specific to this program

To be eligible as a regular student at the MA (bioethics), the candidate must:

  • meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
  • hold an undergraduate degree or the equivalent. Special attention is given to candidates who have experience in the world of health (in hospital practice or research) and to those who are interested in working in this environment.
  • have obtained, in the 1st cycle, an average of at least 3.3 out of 4.3 or the equivalent
