The biochemical engineering course aims to train professionals able to work in the design, development, management and control of biological processes on an industrial scale, preparing a qualified professional to work in a modern interdisciplinary area that integrates chemical engineering, biochemistry and biology.

The counterpoint between the chemical engineer and the biochemical engineer is that the former receives training essentially associated with the chemical and physical transformations of matter, while the latter studies, with greater emphasis, processes where the agents of transformation are living cells, enzymes or other related systems.

In this context, the biochemical engineer is able to work in traditional areas of chemical engineering, as well as work in a different way in the sector that uses industrial biological processes, meeting the demand of some specific market segments, which include:

  • the production of food by fermentation processes;
  • the processing of plant biomass in sectors such as sugar-alcohol, cellulose and paper, and bioenergy and biofuels;
  • the production of inputs for modern agriculture, including the production of bioinsecticides and agents for the biological control of pests;
  • the production and application of enzymes;
  • the production of fermented and distilled beverages;
  • the management and treatment of industrial and municipal waste;
  • the production of antibiotics, vaccines, feed and other products for the care of human and animal health.
