Since its creation, more than 421 master's and 230 doctorate degrees have been awarded, and they work in national and international companies in different sectors of agribusiness, as well as in educational and research institutions, including public and private universities and public research institutes. Applications for the Selection Process for PPGZOO candidates are ongoing and take place throughout the year.

The PPGZOO's area of concentration, called “Animal Quality and Productivity”, brings together several lines of research covering basic and applied research related to different areas and species of zootechnical interest. Since its creation, the PPGZOO has been characterized by the multidisciplinarity of its faculty and research lines. As the only postgraduate program existing at FZEA until 2009, it absorbed faculty from several areas related to animal production, who have worked in the six different PPGZOO research lines.

The first master's degree defense at PPGZOO took place on October 8, 1996, with the dissertation “Study of fiber inclusion in the diet of Dutch calves”, by student Andrei Kimura Marcondes de Castro, advised by Prof. Dr. Marcus Antônio Zanetti, while the first doctoral thesis defense was held on December 19, 2003, under the title “Effect of separation of Pacu larvae ( Piaractus mesopotamicus ) by size, on selection and growth”, developed by Sandoval dos Santos Júnior, advised by Prof. Dr. Francisco Javier Hernandez Blazquez.
