The Graduate Program in German Language and Literature at the University of São Paulo was founded in 1971 and is the only one in Brazil in its specialty. It offers its students solid training at postgraduate level (master's and doctorate) in linguistic, literary, cultural and translational studies related to the German language and the countries that use it, in constant dialogue with the Portuguese language and Brazilian culture.

The studies carried out within the scope of the Program are organized into an Area of ​​Concentration (Language and German Literature) and two Lines of Research:

  • Literature, Culture and Translation Studies
  • German as a Foreign Language (ALE), Linguistics and Translation

Within the scope of Literature, Culture and Translation Studies, research is carried out on literature in the German language, based on its relations with related disciplines, such as cultural studies, history, philosophy, social sciences, communications, arts, new media and Translation. Research gives special importance to the analysis of texts and the construction of theoretical-methodological approaches consistent with the purposes of the studies. Along these lines, the phenomenon of translation is also studied as a process of cultural transfer.
