Established in 1965, the School of Journalism and Communication has the longest history of communication education and research in Hong Kong. The first Master of Philosophy programme was launched in 1977 by the late Professor Wilbur Schramm, one of the founding fathers of communication studies.

A doctoral programme was established in 1993. In 1996, a Master of Social Science programme with a focus on Corporate Communication was launched. In 1999, a Master of Arts programme in Journalism was started, followed by a Master of Science programme in New Media in 2000.

To provide more professional specialism in communication studies, a Master of Social Science in Advertising programme and a Master of Arts in Global Communication programme were introduced in 2004 and 2005 respectively. At present, there are more than 450 postgraduate students.

Our School emphasizes student’s development in both the academic and professional aspects so as to make our students well equipped for future challenges in this information society. Since its establishment, the School has aimed at training quality professional communicators and researchers for the Hong Kong community, and advancing knowledge in various aspects of communication in Hong Kong and other cultures. Our School also contributes to the industry needs of the Hong Kong community by training professionals in journalism, advertising and public relations.

For the Master of Philosophy, Master of Fine Arts, or Master of Music Programme, the applicant shall have:

  • graduated  from  a  recognized  university  and  obtained  a  bachelor’s  degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
  • graduated  from  an  honours  programme  of  a  recognized  university  with  a bachelor’s degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or
  • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

    Applicants from any discipline may apply. Preference will be given to applicants with a solid background in social science and well-developed research interests in communication and media studies. All applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based), or 92 (internet-based/Home Edition); or a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 7.

    Applicants are required to furnish proof of their research potential in the form of:

    • a research proposal;
    • three letters of reference from academic sources; and
    • good undergraduate academic records.
