The Ph.D. in Applied English Linguistics is intended for students who have completed at least an M.A. degree in Applied English Linguistics or a related field of study. The programme provides a supportive environment for conducting applied research in one of the areas of specialisation of the staff of the Department. Students are expected to contribute to current research in applied linguistics, and are encouraged to relate issues and insights from applied linguistics to problems of English as an international language in Chinese or Asian contexts.

In addition to satisfying the general requirements for the Ph.D. degree as laid down by the Graduate School, applicants must hold a Master’s degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, or a language-related field of study awarded by this University or a recognized university.

For the Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Music, Doctor of Nursing, Doctor of Psychology, Doctor of Business Administration (Chinese), Doctor of Social Science in Applied Social Science Programmes, the applicant shall have:

  • a master's degree obtained from a recognized university; or
  • a bachelor's degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a master's degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or
  • been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognized university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council; or
  • obtained the degrees of M.B., Ch.B., or equivalent, or under special circumstances, the degree of bachelor, for admission to programmes of the Faculty of Medicine.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School (http://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk), applicants should

  • possess an MA/MPhil degree in Linguistics or a language-related field, OR have completed the first-year course of an MA/MPhil program in Linguistics or a language-related field, before they are considered for admission;
  • have at least one year of relevant professional experience;
  • submit Master's Thesis OR a sample research paper; and
  • submit a 1,500-word research proposal that demonstrates robust theoretical knowledge in the interested field(s) and sound methodological understanding.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview to be assessed for their linguistic abilities and academic competence in Applied English Linguistics.
