Established in 1965, the School of Journalism and Communication has the longest history of communication education and research in Hong Kong. The first Master of Philosophy programme was launched in 1977 by the late Professor Wilbur Schramm, one of the founding fathers of communication studies.

A doctoral programme was established in 1993. In 1996, a Master of Social Science programme with a focus on Corporate Communication was launched. In 1999, a Master of Arts programme in Journalism was started, followed by a Master of Science programme in New Media in 2000.
To provide more professional specialism in communication studies, a Master of Social Science in Advertising programme and a Master of

Arts in Global Communication programme were introduced in 2004 and 2005 respectively. At present, there are more than 450 postgraduate students.

Our School emphasizes student’s development in both the academic and professional aspects so as to make our students well equipped for future challenges in this information society. Since its establishment, the School has aimed at training quality professional communicators and researchers for the Hong Kong community, and advancing knowledge in various aspects of communication in Hong Kong and other cultures. Our School also contributes to the industry needs of the Hong Kong community by training professionals in journalism, advertising and public relations.

For the Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Music, Doctor of Nursing, Doctor of Psychology, Doctor of Business Administration (Chinese), Doctor of Social Science in Applied Social Science Programmes, the applicant shall have:

  • a master's degree obtained from a recognized university; or
  • a bachelor's degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a master's degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or
  • been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognized university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council; or
  • obtained the degrees of M.B., Ch.B., or equivalent, or under special circumstances, the degree of bachelor, for admission to programmes of the Faculty of Medicine.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should possess a Master's degree in communication/media studies or in a related field of humanities or social science from a recognized research university. All applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based), or 92 (internet-based/Home Edition); or a minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 7.

Applicants are required to furnish proof of their research potential in the form of:

  • a strong Master's thesis;
  • an innovative and methodologically/theoretically strong research proposal outlining areas of interest, goals and plans;
  • three letters of reference from academic sources; and
  • academic records at the Master's and undergraduate levels.

Special consideration will be given to applicants' scholarly achievement and professional experience in related fields.
