The Ph.D. in History is an innovative and intensive course that provides a thorough training in historical methods. It offers a range of specialist options that draw on the latest research, and includes a sustained period devoted to archival research and writing.

Postgraduate Studentship (PGS) is a form of financial assistance provided to full-time postgraduate students registered in research degree programmes. Holders of such studentship are not employees of the University.

The award of a PGS will be made known to students at the same time as they receive their admission offers, students need not make a separate application for obtaining the award. The monthly stipend for Postgraduate Studentship is HK$18,025 – HK$18,525 for 2022-23. Students receiving PGS awards are expected to assist in the teaching and research work of the Department. Their duties will be assigned by the Department Chairman.

For the Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Music, Doctor of Nursing, Doctor of Psychology, Doctor of Business Administration (Chinese), Doctor of Social Science in Applied Social Science Programmes, the applicant shall have:

  • a master's degree obtained from a recognized university; or
  • a bachelor's degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a master's degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or
  • been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognized university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council; or
  • obtained the degrees of M.B., Ch.B., or equivalent, or under special circumstances, the degree of bachelor, for admission to programmes of the Faculty of Medicine.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should

1) have majored in history or a related field;

2) demonstrate their proficient command of language(s) which is/are crucial to their research, for instance, to read/use documents vital to their proposed historical inquiry;

3) submit the following materials together with the application:

  • A detailed research proposal in either Chinese or English. The language of the research proposal is recommended to align with the linguistic preference of potential supervisors;
  • A literature review (minimum 1000 words) of your reserach proposal in the language of the thesis will be;
  • Master's thesis or an academic essay in either Chinese or English; and
  • Evidence of language proficiency as indicated below (CUHK graduates are exempted from this requirement):

First Language Requirement:

  • Either Chinese or English may be chosen as the first language;
  • In the case of Chinese, applicants must provide adequate evidence of proficiency in Chinese such as public examination results or academic record;
  • In the case of English, applicants from non-English-speaking countries are required to submit TOEFL or IELTS (Academic) scores. Those from English-speaking countries should submit SAT or GCE results instead.

Second Language Requirement:

  • It may be any Asian or Western language which is closely related to the intended fields of study; and
  • Applicants must provide adequate evidence of proficiency in that language such as TOEFL or IELTS (Academic) scores, public examination results or academic records.

An interview may be required by the Division.
