Program Purpose: The philosophy undergraduate program is dedicated to preparing graduates for a variety of careers, including law, medicine, or higher education. We provide training in logic or formal reasoning, and provide a broad introduction to both the history of philosophical thought, and contemporary debates in value theory, epistemology and metaphysics. Our graduates are educated to be: successful in graduate programs, and in professional schools, including medicine and law; able to effectively communicate and analyze arguments, as well as write critical argumentative prose; motivated to pursue life-long learning Learning Outcomes Broad background in the following four branches of philosophical inquiry: I. Ethics and Value Theory. The topics here include theories of ethics, politics, law, justice, aesthetics, and of the meaning of life. Topics include also such applied fields as business ethics, bioethics, environmental ethics, engineering ethics, and human rights. II. Metaphysics and Epistemology. The topics here include the nature of mind, the nature of reality, the nature of language, cognitive science, the theory of knowledge, philosophical theology, the history and philosophy of science, and philosophical issues in biology and physics. III. History of Philosophy. The topics here are organized around major periods and movements in the history of philosophy, including classical Chinese philosophy, ancient Greek philosophy, medieval philosophy, early modern philosophy, contemporary analytic philosophy, continental philosophy and existentialism. IV. Logic and Formal Methods. The topics here center on the study of logic. Ability to read and analyze philosophical texts, both contemporary and historical. Ability to engage in in-depth philosophical research culminating in an extended written treatment of a philosophical problem. Ability to articulate philosophical positions, orally.
