A minimum of 18 credit hours of course work, beyond that for a master’s degree that is selected by the supervisory committee is required. Students are required to take a minimum of 12 hours of 7000-level courses. The student must also complete 14 hours of dissertation research in addition to the coursework hours. The course of study is planned with the assistance of the student’s advisor and approved by the student’s supervisory committee. On completion of course work, a qualifying examination must be passed before admission to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree. Students may count no more than 6 credit hours of undergraduate or transfer work and 9 credit hours of non-matriculated graduate work toward any graduate degree without prior approval. Candidates for graduate degrees are required to maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA with no grade below C accepted toward degrees. In addition, only one course (maximum of 4 credit hours) with a grade of C+ or C may be accepted for credit towards a graduate degree.

Admission Requirements

All international graduate applicants to the University of Utah must meet the following minimum Graduate School requirements: A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university or from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in their home country. The Office of International Admissions will determine if applicants with international degrees meet the Graduate School's requirement of a recognized bachelor's degree. At least a 3.0 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA on a 4.0 scale. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated for the last two years attended if schooling was done at a foreign institution, and based upon the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) if the student attended a U.S. institution. Other English Language Requirements: 550 on the TOEFL PBT (paper-based).
