Political science is the study and analysis of the theories, institutions, and processes of political systems and their functions within complex societies. The field examines the structure of governments and their historical evolution over time, as well as the question of how governmental authority is established and maintained in different eras and different societies. In today’s world, political developments are increasingly global in their scope and impact, and the international dimension of political science has grown in significance as a result. Typical career paths: A major in political science provides liberal arts students with opportunities to acquire a broad education that will adapt to a wide variety of fields. Political science graduates are well-equipped to begin building careers in business, law, teaching, journalism, government, and the non-profit sector. Many graduates enter business careers in areas such as marketing, personnel management, public relations, advertising, banking, and finance. Others may directly enter jobs in journalism, government, or teaching or choose to go on to advanced degrees in those areas. Political science offers excellent preparation for law school and a significant number of majors is successful in gaining admission.
