The MPhil in Philosophy is a full-time course, introducing students to the skills needed in philosophical research. Students work with supervisors to write two research essays: the first of up to 4,000 words, the second of up to 8,000 words; and a dissertation of up to 12,000 words. Students also take part as a group in a collaborative weekly seminar, run during Michaelmas and Lent Terms, in which they learn presentation and discussion skills by presenting their own research and by discussing presentations by other students.
The main aims of the MPhil in Philosophy are:
  • to give students with relevant experience at first-degree level the opportunity to carry out focused research in the discipline under close supervision; and
  • to give students the opportunity to acquire or develop skills and expertise relevant to their research interests.

Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK High II.i Honours Degree.
If your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find the equivalent in your country.
Your undergraduate degree must include the equivalent of two years' full-time study in philosophy (10 full courses in the US system). Any offer of a place to a current undergraduate will be conditional on achieving a first class degree (or the international equivalent). However, you may apply if you have already graduated with a good upper second class degree (at least 67%) or the equivalent (US GPA at least 3.6/4), provided that other aspects of your application (such as dissertation marks) show a strong aptitude for further work in philosophy.  Please see further information here.  Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that your referees send their references by the due date.
