Our program offers advanced professional training in journalism and mass communication, leading to a Master of Science degree in either a theory and research or professional tracks. Offering two tracks allows our students a flexible learning experience that focuses on their individual career goals. Students in either track may elect to complete either a thesis or a creative component. Communication Theory and Research track: For students who desire specialized study in research, the School offers advanced academic preparation in communication theory and research. Graduate work prepares students to use and contribute to research and scholarship in the field of mass communication. Common areas of research specialization include: science communication, political communication, visual communication, media effects, advertising, public relations, international and development communication, and organizational communication. Professional and Strategic Communication track: For students who wish to develop or strengthen professional skills, the School offers advanced professional training which prepares students for professional careers in a variety of mass communication fields. Common areas of professional specialization include: journalistic writing and reporting for the traditional and new media, visual communication, advertising and public relations.
