The University Program in Cell and Molecular Biology provides a core curriculum in those subjects that are of importance to all students in the fields of cell and molecular biology, complemented by specific courses in each student's area of concentration. Specializations include molecular genetic and biophysical approaches in the study of: the structure-function relationships of nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids; DNA replication and nuclear structure; cell membranes, motility, and cytoskeletal elements; development and differentiation; receptors and signal transduction; regulation of transcription and translation of genetic information; the development and function of the nervous system; and regulatory events in the immune system. The program features a laboratory rotation system that allows students to research in three laboratories of their choice before selecting an advisor. Required CMB coursework includes a semester-long course in which students choose six (6) two-week in-depth modules taught by faculty experts in those areas, as well as a seminar class in which more senior students give research talks to first and second year students. Peer and faculty mentoring session are also an integral part of the CMB program. Students are admitted directly to the University Program in Cell and Molecular Biology. After the second year of study at Duke, students must identify a participating department in which they will earn the Ph.D. Certificate. Ph.D. admitting program. * - Students may apply and be admitted directly to this program, but the Ph.D. degree is offered only through one of the participating departments. After the second year of study at Duke, students must select and identify a participating department in which they plan to earn the Ph.D. degree. The participating departments are: Biochemistry, Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, Neurobiology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Cancer Biology.
