We offer a single doctoral degree in Psychology which may be earned in one of the following programs: Clinical, Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Developmental, Quantitative, or Social Psychology. Students admitted to one of our 5 programs enter with the expectation of continuing graduate study through the Ph.D. The program adheres to the Boulder Model and strives to not only strike a balance between the scientist and practitioner features of clinical psychology, but also focuses on the integration of science and practice. We believe that competent clinical practitioners must understand, appreciate, and apply the science associated with effective clinical interventions, and that competent clinical researchers must have first-hand experience with clinical disorders that is both broad and in-depth. Accordingly, we aim to produce professionals who demonstrate mastery of knowledge in the field of scientific psychology and who will have (1) the ability to generate new scientific knowledge and theory related to the field of psychology, and (2) can make independent contributions to the evolving base of skills and scientific knowledge required for clinical practice. Moreover, our objective is to train graduates who approach all their work from a strong ethical foundation. The Cognitive and Brain Sciences PhD program at the University of Kansas seeks students with the intellectual potential, motivation, and quantitative aptitude to engage in productive scholarship in a basic or applied area of interest, including: Cognitive psychology, Cognitive neuroscience, Developmental science, Aging and cognition, Child language, Quantitative methods. Training in developmental psychology at the University of Kansas is both interdisciplinary and collaborative. The developmental emphasis is also substantively linked to the Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies, the Kansas Center for Research on Developmental Disabilities/Mental Retardation, and the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience of Communicative Disorders. Because of its broad collaborative nature, many of the Psychology faculty associated with the Developmental emphasis have affiliations with more than one entity on campus. This breadth provides students with vast multi-disciplinary training opportunities. The Quantitative Psychology program provides a unique doctoral training experience, wherein graduate students are trained as quantitative specialists who can interface quantitative methods with substantive issues across the behavioral and social sciences. Students in our program develop a substantial background in quantitative methods. In terms of depth of expertise, some students pursue more depth in quantitative content areas and some students pursue complementary expertise in a non-quantitative content area of psychology (e.g., clinical, cognitive, developmental, health, social, and so on). The Social Psychology Ph.D. Program at the University of Kansas is a research-intensive training program in which students develop skills in research methodology, statistics, and the substantive major content areas in the field.
