The Microbiology programme provides a comprehensive overview of modern research into bacteria, viruses and parasites. It covers both infectious disease and the wider context in which microorganisms exist. Topics include clinical and veterinary pathogens, how infectious diseases can be controlled by the immune system and by pharmaceutical interventions, molecular and cellular principles of microbiology, and environmental and industrial microbiology. Our graduates are employed in many different industries including diagnostic and research laboratories for public health and in hospitals, and in companies in areas including food, brewing, petroleum, water and aquaculture. Others choose to progress to postgraduate study and/or follow research careers in academia or pharmaceutical industries. Some go on to do medicine or teaching. Our graduates are equipped with a flexible, broad-based training that takes them in many directions. The final-year options provide ample opportunity for specialisation towards your chosen career.
