The curriculum in art education is designed for students who plan to teach art in the public schools. Art education at UF provides students with extensive opportunities to apply theory to practice and to hone their knowledge and skills as preprofessional art teachers through field placements in local art classrooms and alternative art education settings. Students study a variety of topics, including comprehensive art education, computer applications in the field, curricular integration, art educational philosophies and theories, developmental theories in art, instructional strategies involving art production and dialogue, alternative assessment strategies, and the role and importance of art in the elementary school curriculum. The program culminates in the student teaching practicum, where students are expected to demonstrate their readiness to assume full responsibility as professional art educators.
