Yale?s doctoral Program in Film and Media Studies quickly achieved the international stature it enjoys today. Building on a core faculty that had long overseen an impressive undergraduate major, the graduate program attracted incoming faculty who were eager to help shape it. The quality of the students who have applied has been superior, and the large majority of those selected have chosen to study here. Fifty students have completed, or are in the midst of, their degrees. Our alumni hold positions at a range of institutions, including universities with major graduate programs, and several have already seen their revised dissertations published as books by important presses. 16 term-courses will be the norm, taken over a two-year period. Students are required to take at least fifteen courses over a two-year period. a. Requirements in Film and Media Studies: Six courses i. FILM 601 (Films and Their Study) ii. FILM 603 (Film Historiography); iii. Four additional seminars in Film Studies. b. Requirements in English: Nine courses i. The English Department?s teaching practicum (ENGL 990) ii. Eight other seminars in literary studies. 1. One seminar in Twentieth and Twenty-first Century 2. One seminar in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century 3. One seminar in either Medieval or Early Modern iii. Cross-listed seminars may be counted toward both the six in FMS and the nine in English, though this does not reduce the need for fifteen courses overall. The DGS of English may allow the substitution of a course outside both departments for an English seminar. c. In some cases, students may receive a very limited number of course credits for prior graduate-level coursework with the approval of the DGSs of both units.
