Elective courses allow for a more interdisciplinary degree for those seeking careers in scientific writing, teaching, and business. (30 credits, six 500-level CHE courses, three 500-level elective courses, final term paper)
(2) MS in Chemistry with Research Concentration: Take advantage of the Department of Chemistry's exciting and innovative research opportunities in a broad range of disciplines and extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Stony Brook University Medical Center, and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Students are required to prepare and defend a thesis based upon their research. (30 credits, four 500-level CHE courses, eighteen credits of research)
PSM(3) MS in Chemistry: Professional Science Master’s Degree: The Professional Science Master’s provides students with the academic foundation and business skills needed to stay one step ahead in an ever-changing technological world. Internships in industrial or governmental laboratories provide students with opportunities to engage in research directly related to national and global needs.
Interdisciplinary course offerings through the School of Business, Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and the School of Journalism. Professional courses specifically designed for the development of students’ critical thinking, project and team management, and communication skills. (42 credits, six 500-level CHE courses, three 500-level Professional courses, two–semester Internship)
Our department ranks among the best in the world, and we pride ourselves on the strength of the interactions between our graduate students and faculty. Graduate students conduct research in a wide range of fields, including core chemistry areas such as Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and more interdisciplinary fields such as Bioorganic, Computational and Materials Chemistry. Joint and affiliated faculty provide integral connections to other departments on campus, including Biochemistry, Geosciences, Materials Science, Physics, Pharmacology, Applied Math, and the Medical School, and to Brookhaven National Lab, including the BNL Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the National Synchrotron Light Source.
Internships affiliated with the National Center for BioEnergy Research and Development (CBERG), Northeastern Chemical Energy Storage Center (NECCES), Long Island High Technology Incubator along with local industrial and governmental laboratories will be coordinated through the Professional Science concentration. These unique experiences along with specialized “professional” courses will provide the MS student the additional background to navigate in an ever-changing technological industry.
Research in the Chemistry Department is supplemented with an active seminar program, including special symposia throughout the year. Members of the department join in active discussions of current research and literature via our student seminar series and annual Chemistry Research Day. Most students also have the opportunity to attend national and international scientific meetings. Optional workshops provide further opportunities for interested students to develop their professional skills, focusing on areas such as research mentoring and proposal writing.
