Mathematics is the language of our universe, providing a common link to all scientific and technological disciplines. The program for the M.S. degree without a thesis must include at least 33 hours of graduate credit, nine hours of which must be lecture courses at the 6000-level. For the M.S. degree with thesis, the program must include at least 30 hours of graduate credit, at least six hours of which must be lecture courses at the 6000-level and six or more hours of which must be Graduate Research, MATH 5099 or STAT 5099. Candidates in a non-thesis program must pass a final comprehensive examination while candidates in a thesis program must pass an oral thesis defense. All M.S. candidates are encouraged to include in their program courses in engineering and science which are closely related to their research in mathematics or statistics. For those intending to terminate study at the M.S. level, specializations supporting specific career goals are possible.
