While the number of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths is rising, there is still significant underrepresentation across the traditionally ‘male-dominated’ STEM subjects. Thankfully, there are many higher education institutions, companies and organisations committed to addressing the imbalance and creating more opportunities for women.  

If you’re a self-identifying woman looking to study a STEM subject, we’ve listed some of the most exciting opportunities around the world, including international scholarships.  

Global scholarships 

AIAA Lockheed Martin Marillyn Hewson Scholarship – For future aerospace professionals, this scholarship is available for female students looking to study across computer science, engineering, mathematics and physics, who can demonstrate financial need.

Anita.B funding for women in technology – AnitaB.org recognises the accomplishments of women and non-binary people in technology through a variety of awards and grants.  

Avanade STEM Scholarship – Partnering with universities and organisations across the world, Avanade understands the importance of attracting more young women to study STEM disciplines. This scholarship has provided scholarships to over 120 young women, created 80 mentorships and 12 students have started a career with Avanade. Check the partner universities for application details.   

Nutanix Advancing Women in Technology Scholarship – Up to 10 scholarships for students in Australia, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom or the United States. Scholarship amounts differ depending on the country. 

Google Travel and Conference Grants – Google believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to start a career in technology and computer science, regardless of gender, race, disability or otherwise. The travel and conference grants allow students to attend events in the computer science and tech-related fields. Open in North America and Europe for women and underrepresented groups.  

 

UK scholarships 

British Council scholarships for women in STEM – If you identify as a woman with a degree or PhD in a STEM subject, you can apply for a scholarship to study a master’s degree or early academic fellowship at a leading UK university. Must demonstrate need for financial support. Scholarships include tuition fees, stipend, travel costs, visa and health fees.  

King’s College London Women in STEM scholarships – Funded by the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences, these scholarships offer financial assistance to outstanding candidates during their undergraduate programme.  

The Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship – For full or part-time graduates who want to pursue a doctorate in physics. This award is dedicated to women and other underrepresented groups in the physics field.  

University of Warwick Women in Engineering Scholars – Committed to addressing the shortage of women role models in engineering, this yearly scholarship supports the most talented students in developing their careers. Winners receive £2,000 per year for each year of study.

QUEST Civil Engineering Scholarship – If you’re looking to study a civil engineering programme, you could receive a scholarship of up to £8,000, paid work placements every summer and the badge of an ICE QUEST scholar. This scholarship is awarded regardless of gender identity.

 

US scholarships 

Alpha Omega Epsilon National Foundation – The AOE National Foundation awards scholarships of differing amounts to women promoting engineering and technical science in the US. 

BHW scholarships for women in STEM – A US$3,000 scholarship for women pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in a STEM subject. Applications open in January and close in April each year. Entrants must write a 500 to 800-word essay about an app you like for the chance to win. 

Science Ambassador Scholarship – Funded by Cards Against Humanity, the Science Ambassador Scholarship provides full tuition for women in STEM pursuing a programme in the US. Applicants must submit a three-minute educational video explaining a STEM topic of interest. 

Southern Automotive Women’s Forum – Financial assistance to women enrolling in a STEM related field at a southern accredited programme that can be used for a career in the automotive industry. Scholarships are available from US$1,000 to $5,000. 

Society of Women Engineers Scholarship – For those who identify as a woman and are studying at community college, baccalaureate or graduate programmes in preparation for a career in engineering. 

WTS Foundation scholarships – A range of scholarships for women and girls pursuing careers in the transportation field. 

Laurels Fund scholarships – Scholarships for women pursuing an PhD in accounting. Awards range from US$1,000 to $5,000. 

Institute of Management Accountants IMA® – An undergraduate scholarship in the amount of US$2,000 for women working towards an undergraduate degree in accounting. Winners also receive a complimentary one-year membership to the IMA, the CMA exam entrance fee and exam registration fee.  

Virginia Heinlein Memorial Scholarship – Dedicated to female candidates majoring in engineering, math, or biological or physical sciences. Four US$4,000 scholarships will be awarded. 

Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship – 400 prizes of US$40,000 and a guaranteed paid internship at Amazon. Applicants must be looking to pursue a computer science or engineering degree in college. While this scholarship isn’t specific to women, it shouldn’t be overlooked. 

 

Australian scholarships 

Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering’s Elevate: Boosting women in STEM scholarships – Open to all women in STEM, the ATSE scholarship encourages applications from women who identify as aboriginal, LGBTQIA+, live with a disability and individuals from culturally-diverse or low socio-economic backgrounds. 

Hypatia Scholarship for Mathematically Talented Women – The University of South Australia offers scholarships to full-time women students who enrol in the Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents. 

Aurora Women in STEM Scholarship – A $1,000 AUD scholarship to provide financial assistance to outstanding women who are commencing the first year of an undergraduate science course at Flinders University.  

Women of STEM scholarship – Offered to young women aged 18-20 who are studying a degree in a STEM related field, the purpose is to provide financial aid for general living costs, course expenses, textbooks or any additional education required. 

Barwon Water Scholarship for Women in STEM – Deakin University offers a scholarship from the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, for domestic female students enrolled in their second year. The scholarship includes a cash payment of up to $5,000 AUD per year for two years. 

 

European scholarships 

Politechnico di Torino Zona International Women in STEM Scholarship – A US$5,000 scholarship to encourage women into education, career opportunities and leadership roles in STEM fields.

European Central Bank Scholarship for Women – The ECB is offering scholarships of €10,000 each to 15 female students in the fields of economics, statistics, engineering and computing. 

The Generation Google Scholarship – This award is for women in computer science and is based on each candidate’s impact on diversity, demonstrated leadership, and academic background. Each winner receives €7,000 for the academic year.

RWTH Aachen University Women in Engineering Scholarship – Created to enable more qualified female engineering students to pursue a master’s at RWTH International Academy, this scholarship covers 25 percent of the tuition fees for a master’s in engineering. 

 

Asian scholarships 

Women in tech at Plashka University – Up to Rd 6 lakh in scholarship for high-performing women candidates, one-on-one mentorship with a female leader and career development at Plashka University in India. 

Otsuka Toshimi Scholarship Foundation – International scholarships for students of medicine, pharmacology, nutrition, physical education or business administration to study in Japan. 

Japan-IMF Scholarships Program for ASIA – Asian scholarships for students currently working in economy and finance within a government agency (e.g. ministry of trade) to study in Japan in a related field. Open only to students from selected Asian countries. 

NTU University Engineering Scholarship – While this scholarship isn’t specifically for women, NTU University in Singapore is offering awards for undergraduate engineering students. Includes tuition fee, living allowance of $5,800 SGD per year and a one-time computer allowance of $2,000 SGD.
