The study of development is central to modern biology. It is revealing how multi-cellular organisms form the correct cells, tissues and organs in the right place at the right time, to generate a complex and functional organism.

We can now understand much more about how genes control development, with modern scientific advances enabling scientists to:

  • manipulate and mutate genes
  • introduce new genes into embryos
  • suppress gene expression in specific cells at specific times in development

Analysis of related genes in different species has shown that the same developmental mechanisms are often used in vertebrates, invertebrates and plants.

This is a revolutionary area of science and deeper understanding is important for future disease therapy or for industrial applications.
